 A GREAT place to eat on the square in Covington Ga.!

My wife and I and friends have been a few times and it's great food and atmosphere

I had been wanting to do a large oil painting of it ever since it opened up but could never get the right elements happening around it. Sometimes the lighting wasnt right or the sky was too black or too blue. Most of the time too many cars were parked around it taking away from the beauty of the bldg.

So one stormy night I sat at home looking out my upstairs studio window and the sky was going thru some changes I thought looked interesting. I thought "Mystic Grill." So I got in my car immediately and drove  15 minutes and got to the Grill. It was app. 9:30pm late May and the sky was perfect. I quickly took photos of it and it was as you see here in this photo of the painting. I came by the next evening and did two outdoor preliminary sketches of the bldg becasue quite often a photograph will distort (compress or stretch) objects. So once I got everything scaled right I went to work on it. The painting is a large 18x24 and has won Best of Show and 1st Place Awards.

Flat Rascal 11x14 Beautifully Framed

This is a scene I drive by every time I go up to our cabin in NC mountains near Murphy.

I really liked this view and took quite a few photos of it. Wouldve liked to have painted it plein air but wasnt possible this trip as had to work on the AC unit at the cabin. My initial painting of it had too many highlights/reflections from sunlight on the truck. I really wanted it to be colorful also but I had too many blues in highlight areas. So in essence, my focal point was way TOO focal. The general value of painting as a whole was out of wack. I went back and subdued or removed those highlights and finally got to this point where I felt everything was much more balanced. So be careful with your highlights. Weigh them and dont immediately jump to the conclusion, as I did, that things looked great. Only to find out a few days later there's an overkill happening that has to be corrected.

The Madison Tressel was fun to paint. The sunlight striking the 

grass behind the tree trunk is what initially caught my 

eye along with the sun striking the tressel. This one came fairly easy. 

Finally !!  Basically painted itself as artists sometimes say. I had painted a red truck heading out of town but the decided it stole the show from the tressel and other points of interest.

 I dont know how many times I drove by these two old trucks vowing I would stop one day and take a few photos of them to later paint. One day that happened and I took out my sketch pad and did a quick rendering so as not to trust the photo for the right dimensions and perspective. Then I finally got around to painting it.
